Social Dance
The Rumba
The Rumba that we teach today in our Rumba dance lessons in Washington DC are derived from a Cuban rhythm and dance called the Bolero-Son. It first gained traction in the United States in the early 1930s and since then it has remained one of the most popular social dances. Rumba is characterized by smooth, subtle hip motion and a heavy walking step. The slower rhythm of the Rumba allows for dancers to develop the distinctive hip action of Latin dances called Cuban Motion. The music is written with four beats to each step as the footwork is counted once slowly then followed by two quick steps.
Since the music of the Rumba is slower than many other dances, it provides an opportunity to add an extra layer of choreography, style, and flair, along with perfecting the ability to lead and follow. Rumba is traditionally danced in closed hold, with the lead’s arms around the follow’s waist, although some modern versions allow for open holds as well. It is characterized by passionate and sensual movements, with the lead often controlling the follow’s movements. The dance can be slow and smooth or fast and dynamic, depending on the music being used.
Taking Rumba dance lessons in Washington DC is one of the best starting points for achieving great Latin and ballroom dancing technique. It can be considered an anchoring point that all the rest of your Latin dances are tethered to. Any dancer who can successfully dance Rumba will see an immediate benefit in the other dances they enjoy, including Waltz, Bachata, Cha Cha, and Salsa.
Benefits of the Dance
Benefits Of Taking Rumba Dance Lessons In Washington DC:
Get Closer to Your Partner
Although the Rumba is not danced with the same body contact that is used in smooth-style dances, it is still a passionate dance. Sometimes also known as the dance of love, Rumba steps are slow and deliberate.
Learn Hip Movements
The Rumba is danced in place and the steps are quite compact. Smooth and subtle movement of the hips is characteristic of the Rumba, allowing dancers to learn how to add their own unique flair and style to the dance.
Get Toned
Like many other ballroom and Latin dances, Rumba is a great way to one and strengthen the legs, glutes, and core. It is not as fast paced as some other dances, but still provides a good workout and helps new dancers get toned.
Start Slow
Of the five competitive international Latin dances (Pasodoble, Samba, Cha-Cha, Jive, and Rumba), Rumba is the slowest. It’s one of the ballroom dances which occurs in both international competitions and social dance.
Leading & Following
The Rumba is absolutely essential when it comes to creating great skills as a leader or follower. Once you master the ability to lead and follow, you can establish a dance partnership that functions as one cohesive unit.
